Band Baaja Barat, a Bollywood hit has been remade in Tamil with Nani and Vani in Tamil and dubbed in Telugu as Aaha Kalyanam.
What is it about?
Shruti (Vaani) wants to be a famous wedding planner and Shakti (Nani) a street smart guy joins her as business partner. They start off with street weddings and become popular within no time. Shruti asks Shakti not to mix romance with finance, but eventually falls for him. But Shakti doesn't express his love for her and differences crop up.
Performances:
Nani is entertaining in the lead role. He carried off the character of Shakti with ease. His broken English and funny antics will leave you in splits. He has owned the character and delivered the best he can. Vaani Kapoor did an okay job as the female lead. She is good in the first half and was average in the second half. They both made a good pair and that is one of the positive aspects of the film. Supporting cast are mostly Tamilians and everyone did alright. Simran appeared in a cameo.
Technicalities:
Director Gokul Krishna is loyal to the original. He didn't make too many changes to BBB script. He handled the entertainment part well, but faltered in getting the feel right in emotional scenes. The soul of the movie lies in the second half and director couldn't do the magic of the original in this part.
Music by Dharan Kumar is not so impressive. All the songs had Tamil flavor and don't impress our audience. Camera work is good and editing is just fine. The class of YRF can be seen in the production values.
Analysis:
Aaha Kalyanam has a nice premise. We don't see the lead characters playing Wedding planners often. However, we have already seen this in Jabardasth, which was blatantly copied from Band Baaja Baarat. First half of the film is almost identical to that of Jabardast for Telugu audience.
Those who have seen the original will not be too pleased with Aaha Kalyanam as that energy is missing in it. Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma have made that movie special and that chemistry is lacking between Nani and Vani. Although Nani has put up a formidable show, he could only produce some bright moments here and there.
Second half is too flat with predictable screenplay. This part doesn't work if you don't feel the pain of the characters. Aaha Kalyanam started off well and fizzles too quickly and ends up as an average fare. You can try it if you haven't watched the original. Those who have seen BBB can wait for the home edition of Aaha Kalyanam.
Verdict: This Marriage is just Average!
Plus Points:
Lead Pair
Music
Cinematography
Direction
Minus Points:
Second Half Screenplay
Dragged Pre Climax
Editing
